The full failure of this govt on climate change was exposed in this exchange with Varadkar – the usual patronising attitude and false smears – the continued defence of exploration for fossil fuels we can’t use (if we are to stop global tempreture rises of over 2 degrees). They’re breaking the Dáil’s own rules to stop progress of this Bill. #WorkHarderBeNicer to Lowry and his gang; that will save the planet! Someone tell Greta Thurnberg!

RTE and MET Eireann have a responsibility to ‘tell it like it is’ regarding #ClimateChange. I put a series of questions to MET Eireann and RTE reps at our Dail committe on climate change, as to why they don’t put greater emphasis on the fact that climate events are not just ‘weather’, and reporting extreme weather events should be linked to its cause, ie serious climate change. Naming and reporting the truth are essential if we are to properly inform the public and address the issues

If RTE had given me more than just one sentence here I would said that what we need to tackle climate change, is not carbon taxes on ordinary people but carbon taxes on the real culprits, the giant corporations, and we need to stop further exploration for fossil fuels. VIVA THE YELLOW JACKETS!

I questioned officials from the Department of Agriculture . We have one the worst records in Co2 emissions and our plan is to increase those emissions in agriculture, despite what the IPCC report tells us is happening. They really dont get the urgency of tackling #ClimateChange, and while our forest cover is among the lowest in Europe, planting monocultures of Sitka spruce will do nothing to help the environemnt or climate. Nor will Govt policy help lower-income farmers, who could play a huge and progressive role in mitigating climate change

Bills benefits would far outweigh any costs says Brid Smith TD

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has labelled an Oireachtas report on the proposed bill to ban exploration for oil and gas as “pure fantasy” based on “pretty flimsy economic grounds”.

The research explicitly excluded looking at any economic benefits of the ban while much of its figures are based on “what if” scenarios that speculate on some find in the future.Read more »

Brid Smith TD has described as extremely worrying comments from Sean Canney while addressing delegates at the Atlantic Ireland exploration conference in Dublin.

The Minister effectively pledged Government support for future exploration for gas and oil in Ireland. He criticised a proposed Bill from Brid Smith of People before Profit that would ban future licencing for exploration saying it would do nothing to reduce Irelands emissions.Read more »

It speaks volumes, doesn’t it, when the new Minister for the Environment OPPOSES a Bill that seeks to ban the use of a type of plastic that serves little purpose other than to pollute (and to make profit of course). And as for the mafia-like ‘waste disposal’ outfits – where’s the controls on them? These were some of the points I made in the debate yesterday
