People Before Profit TD calls for Government to pay redress to Magdalene survivors without any more delay

Press Release- Bríd Smith TD, People Before Profit       06/03/2018

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith will call on the government to act and stop any delay in paying out redress to the Magdalene survivors.
Deputy Smith will raise the issue today, with Leo Varadkar, at promised legislation in the Dáil today.
This is a response to the news that at least seven survivors of the institutions have passed away while awaiting payments in compensation for their suffering.
The TD will highlight delays in the Department of Justice and urge that the Government devote whatever resources are needed to speed up the process.
The Magdalene survivors group are also calling for assistance in funding a two-day event for survivors in the Mansion House.
Deputy Smith will call for the Government to fund the event.
“The State should pick up the tab for this two-day event and assist the survivors’ group in bringing these women together.”Deputy Smith will also support the idea of a fitting memorial for the survivors: “The idea, proposed by some of the survivors that the Sean McDermott Street laundry site be used for social housing, is an excellent idea. A country that forgets these events is likely to repeat them.”
