People Before Profit TD raises questions about Pro-Life campaign in light of Cambridge Analytica revelations

Press Release- Bríd Smith TD, People Before Profit    20/03/2018     Immediate Release

Referendum Commission must launch enquiry into online strategy and tactics of pro-life campaign

People Before Profit TD, Bríd Smith, has raised concerns about the potential for the Pro-Life campaign to use the data mining and profiling of voters to sway peoples voting in the upcoming repeal referendum. The TD for Dublin South Central said that questions needed to be asked as the Pro-Life campaign have been shown to be employing UCampaign who were involved in setting up apps to promote the Trump “America First” strategy.

The pro-life movement has also employed Kanto whose founder worked in Cambridge Analytica

Deputy Smith said: “I have serious questions whether the pro-life movement in employing UCampaign are now in a position to use the same data mining techniques on social media like what was recently exposed over the weekend about Cambridge Analytica.

“The revelations of data mining on Facebook and the manipulation of people’s emotions in regard to political issues were quite startling.

“This poses serious questions about our democracy in the lead up to the repeal referendum and I would implore the referendum commission to launch a full-scale enquiry into the operations and online strategy and tactics of the pro-life movement and the companies that they have employed.”
