Brid Smith says the move is welcomed and that education courses must be equally available to all citizens.

TD Brid Smith has welcomed the news that Kylemore college has reversed the proposed hike in music fees for adults attending courses at the college. The proposal would have seen fees almost doubled.
The TD said the original move was highly discriminatory as it was aimed at adult students and openly designed to dissuade them from attending courses.
The justification we got when we queried this was that the college had a policy to attract younger students on these courses. They were openly admitting that the policy was to discriminate against mature students on he basis of age.

On the advice of Deputy Brid Smith a number of mature students notified the college that they intended to take a case under the equal status act. In response the college while not admitting the move could be a breech did announce that they would put off any proposed increases for now.
“Its a welcome move but we have to be vigilant and insure all education and courses are open to all regardless of age, class or sex.”

Press Release- Bríd Smith TD, People Before Profit   11/05/2018

Brid Smith TD of People Before Profit has called for the immediate resignation of Leo Varadkar and Simon Harris. She said: “Internal memos that were released yesterday show that the HSE put their own publicity strategy ahead of informing women about faults in their cervical cancer screening. “Yet the former Ministers, who were responsible for the health services, are taking no responsibility. This is outrageous. I do not believe for one minute that Leo Varadkar and Simon Harris knew nothing about the HSE strategy. It beggars belief that two ambitious men who, to put it mildly, have a record of heightened concern about PR, were not informed about the publicity strategy of the HSE.Read more »

TD calls for short focused review of cervical screening service

Danger of an overblown exercise that takes months and yields no new insights, says Brid Smith TD

Bríd Smith TD has called on Minister Simon Harris to focus any inquiry into the actual consequences of the outsourcing of cervical screening in 2008.

The Dublin South Central TD said the core issue remains a simple one, “did the decision to outsource cervical screening result in a deterioration of the quality of the screening and did this put women’s lives at risk?”Read more »
