Today in the Dáíl, People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith, will introduce the Housing Emergency in the Public Interest Bill 2016.
The Bill seeks to reduce rents back to 2011 levels and will maintain rents at the level of the Consumer Price Index going forward. The Bill also seeks to reduce the grounds on which a landlord can terminate a tenancy.

Brid Smith said, “The current measures being proposed by the government to cap rents at 4% would make the rental situation much worse and more unaffordable for people even than it currently is. This during a time when rents have never been higher and the homelessness and housing crisis so stark.
“My Bill seeks to make rents more affordable for people by bringing them back to 2011 levels. It also seeks to make it more difficult for landlords to evict people.
“We are in a situation at the moment where rents are skyrocketing past event Celtic Tiger levels whilst wages and welfare rates are still at recession levels. People are going homeless every day and this government’s only solution to it is to allow further increases to rents. It is quite shocking.

  1. Shocking indeed, capping rent increases by 4% is no solution. What does that mean to families already struggling or the homeless, even workers on an above average wage struggle to support their families and literally are living on the breadline…. I know this first hand. Give people a home and an education and they will prosper a chance to call somewhere home, a chance to work to provide what their families need give people an indented sense of pride, how can we offer hope of a brighter future when people are being pushed further into poverty by a government that keeps taking. I was under the impression that our government should be run by the freshest most educated minds our country can offer, what’s going on now is just farcical. My 5 year old told me today that people who take most of the the sweets and keep taking more from the people with less sweets should go to prison because they are stealing and its wrong to leave people with no sweets at all because its not fair. A 5 year old, need I say more…..

    • Sorry to be so late getting back Kar – apologies – everything is hectic.
Your 5 year-old is obviously being well-reared, and although only little – is head and shoulders above many of my fellow TDs.
      Good on ya
