People Before Profit TD Brid Smith welcomes announcement from Sisters of Charity

Today’s announcement from the Sisters of Charity that they are withdrawing from the boards of three hospitals, in particular from the new National Maternity Hospital is a historic move and a vindication of the tens of thousands who protested to have the church removed from the running of the new facility. Brid Smith TD in Dail on housing crisis and failed government policies

WHAT SORT OF SOCIETY ARE WE LIVING IN? The robber bankers walk free, two hundred thousand empty properties while homeless children sleep in the park. Meantime our government and the media focus on the beauty contest between two failed ministers. And none of them will support progressive legislation to address the housing crisis.

People Before Profit TD, Brid Smith, has attacked the planned closure of beds at the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Mental Health services at Cherry Orchard Hospital in Ballyfermot.

The TD who represents the local catchment area around the Hospital said the closure of 50% of the 22 beds due to a shortage of nurses demonstrates the crisis in both mental health services and the wider National Health Service. Read more ›

Taoiseach defended murderous Libyan deal on refugees

Dr Conor Kenny from Sligo spoke on the radio May 9 th (Morning Ireland, RTE) about his experiences as a doctor (MSF) on board a refugee rescue ship in the Mediterranean. It was horrific. Too many people, too few boats, people screaming in pain from injuries as boats sank. At least 200 drowned. He spoke of what refugees told him about their experiences in Libya where men, women and children are beaten, raped, and sold as slaves within the detention centres that are meant to care for them. Back in February I challenged the Taoiseach on his support for EU plans to give Libya €200 million to ‘care for’ refugees. He defended this deal. Taoiseach Enda Kenny should listen to Dr Conor Kenny’s account of the horror that this deal entails. This is the video starts with Dr Kenny (audio recording) folowed by my exchange with the Taooiseach on the Libyan deal, back in February this year. Surely he can’t continue to stand over what he said

VARADKAR FAILS ON MATERNITY RIGHTS BUT RAMPS UP WELFARE ATTACKS

I was glad to have the opportunity on Vincent Brown’s programme last night to have a go at Varuka. He’s spending big public money on a minimal amount of welfare fraud but doesn’t have enough resources to make sure new mothers get their maternity benefits. But sure they’re only women!!!!

CAPITALISM IS BURNING UP THE PLANET – WHERE’S THE URGENCY?

I questioned Minister Naughton on the policies that our government pursues that make matters worse, rather than better, in relation to emissions that cause global warming. I asked about transport policies and cows, in particular. The video here shortens some of the waffle I got by way of reply, but the evident lack of joined-up thinking is appalling – and very scary.
