Boylan Pushed Out By Simons Sham Assurances

Dr Peter Boylan’s resignation is a principled and admirable stand against the decision to allow the National Maternity Hospital to be owned by the Religious Sisters of Charity. His resignation letter exposes the government’s blindness and Simon Harris’s sham assurances that the Catholic Church will have no influence over the medical practices conducted in the hospital.

In Dr Boylan’s own words, it is naïve and delusional to say that the National Maternity Hospital will be the only hospital in the world owned by a Catholic congregation to allow sterilisation, IVF, abortion, gender reassignment surgery and other procedures against Church teaching.

In 2017, it is appalling that the Catholic Church is given such a privileged position by the state. The uproar from our citizens illustrates that Fine Gael are horrendously out of step on this issue with popular opinion.

People Before Profit demands that the government issues a Compulsory Purchase Order so that the hospital is fully owned and run by the state. Religious doctrine has no place in healthcare and it is high time we have a separation of church and state in this country.

People Before Profit stands in solidarity with women in Ireland and their needs should be places ahead of the Church. It is not Peter Boylan who should resign but those who have stood over and implemented this deal which involves around 300 million of taxpayers’ money.

  1. An unfortunate occasion to loose Dr Peter Boylan’s wisdom skill experience and integrity.

We need a new maternity hospital. Solution is about ownership. State to ask or CPO land plot from SOC. Governance can then be finalised.

If ownership remains with SOC, the States looses e300 million from its balance sheet. Plus face legal lawsuits battling canon vs Irish law for years to come. This would set precedence on other religious run hospitals.

The HSE DofH and Minister for Health did a very incomplete shoddy job as they have created a mess. Someone need to be held accountable to avoid a similar situation happening again.

  2. Unfortunate to loose Dr Boylan for many reasons.

Ask the Sisters of Charity to give or CPO land to resolve this dispute. We need a new maternity hospital.

    • Thanks Louise – we need, I believe, a complete sparation of Church and State and an entire everhaul of all our health services – an end to a two-tier system, adequate funding by taxing the wealthy and the corporations, and proper remuneration of all our health-care workers. These things are possible, but it’ll take fighting for them.
